Coastal Live Oak

Coast Live Oak (Quercus Agrifolia)

Found in California From Sonoma County south all the way to Baja California. It says on every book that he Coast Live Oak was "first" "discovered" by the spanish who named it 'Encina' in the mid 1700's. However, the indians of the region had known the trees around them and it's medicinal properties way longer than that. This one in Particular was one of their favorite. Other trees like the California Buckeye's poisonous seeds were used to stupefy fish and making it easy to catch them. The Coast Live Oak's acorns are favorite among the squirrels and birds like Western Scrub-jays. You can find many Coast Live Oaks in Golden Gate Park. You can find numerous at the Japanese Tea garden and the area towards the California Academy of Sciences.
