This beautiful tree has a pyramid shape when young but acquires character and shape as it gets older. Example of this transformation is the Monterey Cypress trees by the beaches near Carmel, Ca. which are molded in shape by the winds coming from the ocean. The best example of a beautiful Monterrey Cypress in San Francisco is the iconic large tree at the corner of Stanyan St. and John F. Kennedy Drive. Unlike the beach wind-influenced trees in Carmel, this one is a large well proportionate well balanced tree. Its branches are of similar size on all sides not leaning to one side more than the other. This tree was planted there in the 1800's and is reaching the end of it's life. On the pictures below you have the iconic Monterey on Stanyan St. and also a smaller more triangular in shape tree on O'shaughnessy Blvd. on Glen Canyon Park.
